Growing up in a small town in the Northwest meant fun times playing and working outside. When the school year ended, kids of all ages would begin working in the “berry fields”. Strawberry picking was both a moneymaker and a social activity. The drill was rise early in the morning, catch the berry bus and then be transported to the fields. A typical day consisted of both picking and eating berries and maybe even throwing a few at the boys. The more berries picked meant more money for school clothes, or a new red bicycle.
